Senator Mark Allen was pleased to welcome two of Governor Fallin’s Executive Nominations from Sequoyah County to the Capitol this week. Both Executive Nominees are newly appointed. Friends and supporters attended the Senate Education Committee meeting where the nominees were introduced by Senator Allen and then allowed to address the committee and answer any questions. Attendees included Representative John Bennett, retiring Carl State Albert College President Garry Ivey, and retired educator Gail Kerr.
Nancy Poindexter was appointed to the State Textbook Committee on April 27, 2016, with her term expiring March 1, 2019. Mrs. Poindexter, who is certified in mathematics, is filling a vacant position and will serve as a member from the Second Congressional District.
The Oklahoma State Textbook Committee is comprised of parents, teachers, and community members who have been appointed by the Governor. The committee conducts a process for the approval of textbooks and technology-based materials which local school districts, upon recommendation of local committees, may purchase with state-provided funds.
Mrs. Poindexter has taught school for 22 years and is currently in her 16th year teaching at Brushy Schools. Senator Allen was pleased to nominate and approve her appointment to this committee and feels she is highly qualified to serve.
Dwight Spencer of Sallisaw was appointed to the Board of Regents for Carl Albert State College by Governor Mary Fallin on April 20, 2016, succeeding the late Jerry Hetherington, with an unexpired term ending July 1, 2019.
Created in 1973, the Board of Regents for Carl Albert State College is responsible for the supervision, management, and control of the former community junior college at Poteau, with a branch campus established in Sallisaw in 1996. The Board has seven appointed members serving terms of seven years.
Dwight is General Manager/Owner of Blue Ribbon Auto Group in Sallisaw, and is very active in the community, currently serving as Title Sponsor of the Sallisaw Lions Club RAM Rodeo and Chairman of the Diamond Daze Festival Entertainment Committee. He was President of the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce in 2004, Board Member of the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce from 2002 to 2005, and Treasurer and Board Member of the Sallisaw Education Foundation from 2002 to 2006. He has received the Outstanding Festival Volunteer Award in 2012 and been named the Sallisaw Chamber Member of the Year in 2009.
“We all know no one can replace the beloved Jerry Hetherington who served as Carl Albert State College Regent for 33 years, and we truly mourn the loss of a great man in our community,” said Senator Allen, “but I believe that Dwight Spencer also has a heart for this community and is one of those men who answer the call to serve. He will do an excellent job on the Board of Regents and comes to us highly recommended from retiring President Garry Ivey. It was my pleasure to nominate him for this appointment.”
